The Lost City of Atlantis
Are you familiar with the lost city of Atlantis spoken about in various kinds of literature throughout the ages?
Atlantis which is translated as island of Atlas in ancient Greek is supposedly a fictional island which was termed by Plato in his works Timaeus and Critias.
It is a story of the war between two independent developed states, apparently, 9000 years before Plato’s time.
Atlantis is considered an antagonistic nation-state with incredible naval capability which lays a siege on The Republic which was the protagonist state mentioned by Plato in his works.
Eventually, The Republic successfully wards off the attacks by Atlantis unlike any other nation at their time which fell by Atlantis’s aggressive expansion strategies.
Plato’s works are less of a small description of events but more war between two ideologies, where one was based around a utopian theme, where most of the power lay at the hands of a noble lineage, power at the expense of suppressing the citizens, while another considered putting its citizens’ needs first.
It is mentioned in his work that later on Atlantis drowned deep down in the Atlantic Ocean after it fell out of favour from their gods.
Although Plato’s works do not over embellish the antagonistic state, the historians, after his time along with the authors, gave it much more importance.
They considered Atlantis to be an actual state, considering that those stories might, rather than just fiction, be more of a recounting of things that might have happened.
Many utopian works, such as New Atlantis by Francis Bacon, and Utopia by Thomas More, insisted on considering Atlantis as a today with historical origins that had actually existed at some point, an example of an incredibly developed civilization much developed as compared to the rest of the world.
Whenever the talk of lost civilizations occurs between historians, Atlantis is sure to come up as a matter of fact.
Although in modern times the philologists, as well as classicalists, mutually agree on the fact that the story was more of a fictional allegory than anything else, it is a curious fact that what was it based on?
Most of the works by Plato were inspired from different traditions around the globe, which raises the question that although Atlantis might not have been a real city, the concept may have been borrowed from some other nation of similar design.
Being sunk into the Atlantic Ocean might be just another way of indicating its downfall.
Location of Atlantis
The location of the historic city of wonders has been a matter of much debate in both scientific and literary circles. It has come to become a legend on its own, irrelevant to the minor role in Plato’s work.
Many locations have been hypothesised over time by experts, most of which have not even been anywhere in the Atlantic Ocean.
Although scientists continue to claim it to be Merely a fictional character, pseudoscientists and even psychics continue to offer various merely related to the existence of the lost city of Atlantis.
Mediterranean Sea region
The majority of the locations proposed over time are located in the Mediterranean sea or in nearby areas. Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Cyprus Tartessos, are some proposed locations in the Mediterranean sea region.
Back in 16 to 17 century BC an enormous tsunami caused by Thera eruption is known to have destroyed the Minovan civilization. This event leads some to believe that the area of the island of criteria which was host to the said civilization may be related to the legend of Atlantis.
Doggerland in Europe
A few of the suggestions include northern Europe for the possible location off Atlantis nation from Doggerland in the North Sea to Sweden.
At the same time, a tremendous tsunami ravaged the area of Doggerland and Viking Bergen island. Which makes it a possible location for some pseudoscientists.
The Atlantic Ocean
Although many of the locations are situated around the Mediterranean sea region, the theories related to the locations in the Atlantic Ocean have their own alluring appeal considering they’re linked to Plato’s work.
Madeira Islands and the Canary Islands are the possible locations theorised by some for Atlantis in the Atlantic Ocean region.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
Tourists flock to this place, marvelling at the simplistic beauty offered by the gigantic construct. It was constructed in the 2580 to 2560 BC of 4th dynasty and is made up of limestone and granite.
An extraordinary marvel of ancient technology and development in the field of architecture with a height reaching up to 146.7 metres and base expanding around 230.34 metres.
The great pyramid of Giza was also known as Akhet Khufu in ancient Egypt. It is the most ancient and the biggest pyramid among the three of the Giza pyramid complex.
From 2560 BC to 1311 AD, it remained the tallest building in the whole world. It is believed among scientists, known as Egyptologists, that The Great Pyramid of Giza was built to act as a Tom for the pharaoh Khufu of the old dynasty Egypt.
The original height was around 481 feet or 146.5 metres, for 3800 years it continued to be the tallest human construct.
What can be seen nowadays after all this time is only the inner core that stood the test of time valiantly. Originally, the pyramid was coated with limestone in such a way that it provided it with a smooth and reflective outer surface to the pyramid.
There have been various assumptions made regarding the construction processes, from scientific facts to an extreme hypothesis by pseudoscientists, including even alien interference in some cases.
The most renowned theory claims that enormous stones were extracted from a quarry and later on lifted to fit into their places.
It consists of 3 chambers that are publicly known. The lowest chamber was left unfinished and other chambers are known as King’s chamber and Queen’s chamber.
The most important portion of the Giza complex is Mortuary temples constructed in the honour of the pharaoh Khufu.
I found numerous myths related to the construction of the pyramids of Giza, the major one being the use of slaves in its construction.
Did you know that around 10,000 permanent masons and a total of 70,000 seasonal workers were invested in its construction? which spanned about 20 years from the date it commenced.
There are numerous myths and legends out there, stories untold, just waiting for an author to unveil the secrets to the public.
