Canadian Actor Jim Carrey Celebrates His 60th Birthday This Week

Jim Carrey Celebrates His 60th Birthday

The celebrations begin this week for Jim Carrey, a popular Canadian-born actor, comedian, writer, and producer. Carry turned 60 on Monday, January 17. Always a comedian at heart, Jim took to social media on his birthday to make a silly video that was posted on his Twitter account that stated he was “60 and sexy.”

So how exactly did he plan to spend his birthday celebrating this year? He also kidded around in the video saying he’s “old but gold” and that “he’d spend his night eating creamed corn and canned peaches.”

Popular Movies From the 90s Starring Jim Carrey

Best known for his successful acting career that skyrocketed in the ’90s, Jim Carrey starred in many hit movies throughout the decade. Some of my all-time favorites include:

The Mask 1994, Starring Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey plays the leading role in this movie as Stanley Ipkiss, a bank clerk who discovers a mask that magically transforms him into a silly, green-faced character with superpowers to change not only himself but his surroundings as well. He uses this newfound superpower to help fight crime.

The Mask was very successful in theatres and made over $351 million at the box office. It was the second most profitable movie in history, next in line, behind Superman.

The Mask also earned Carrey a Golden Globe nomination for his outstanding role in the movie. This film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Effects.

A sequel, later released in 2005, did not do nearly as well as the first film.

Ace Ventura, Pet Detective 1994, Starring Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey also played the leading role in this movie as Ace Ventura, an animal detective in search of the Miami Dolphins Football Team’s stolen dolphin mascot. Not long after, the dolphin goes missing. Some of the team players also went missing, including Dan Marino. Jim Carrey plays a significant role as a detective in this humorous comedy.

Ace Venturer grossed approximately $107 million worldwide at the box office. Many of the critics’ reviews were unfavorable. However, that did not stop them from releasing a sequel to the movie in 1995 called When Nature Calls.

Ace Venturer also became a cartoon television series from 1995 to 2000 and again aired in 2009 as Ace Ventura Junior Pet Detective.

Dumb and Dumber 1994, Starring Jim Carrey

Dumb and Dumber is another 90s movie that Jim Carrey played the leading role in. 1994 was a busy year for Carrey, as the leading roles kept pouring in.

In this movie, Carrey plays the part of Lloyd Christmas, alongside his best friend Harry Dunn, played by Jeff Daniels. The two characters find a suitcase full of money left in a taxicab by a random lady on the way to the airport. They try to return the money to the rightful owner, not realizing its connection to a kidnapping. Oblivious to the fact that they are being followed by the police and hired hitmen, the two fools attempt to return the money. This is a great must-see comedy, full of non-stop laughter.

Dumb and Dumber earned 247.3 million at the box office. It also earned Carry his reputation as one of the best actors of the 90s. The movie had two sequels and an animated television series made after its original release.

The Cable Guy 1996, Starring Jim Carrey

In this classic 90s film, Carry plays the lead role of Chip Douglas. Chip is an eccentric cable installer with a lisp when he speaks. He becomes infatuated with a customer, Steven Kovacs, played by actor Matthew Broderick.  Obsessively, Chip attempts to gain his friendship by offering him free cable service and bonus premium channels. When Steven wants nothing to do with Chip, he turns into a crazy stalker that is quite apparent to Steven. However, nobody else seems to believe him, including his family members and the police.

The Cable Guy, directed by Ben Stiller, is not the typical comedy that Jim Carrey is used to playing. Instead, it is a little on the darker side. The film, however, was still a tremendous success at the box office, bringing in $102 million. It also received mixed reviews from critics.

Liar, Liar 1997, Starring Jim Carrey

It’s no surprise that Jim Carrey starred in another hit 90’s movie. His successful 90’s career was definitely on a roll by this point.

In this comedy film, Carrey plays the part of a lawyer who spends his entire career telling lies. One day, he wakes up to find himself cursed with the ability to speak only the truth. He struggles frantically with the curse and tries not to lose his career as a lawyer in the process. During his honesty stage, he manages to reconcile with his ex-wife and son, who had previously disowned him for being a pathological liar.

This movie was one of the most profitable movies of the ’90s for Carrey. It did very well at the box office, bringing in a whopping $302 million. It was the second-best three-day opening movie ever for Universal Studios. Jurassic Park is the first.

The Truman Show 1998, Starring Jim Carrey

This 90s movie also stars Carrey as Truman Burbank, a seemingly ordinary man growing up in Seaside, Florida. Not knowing that his boring life is actually being televised by a major television company. The whole world watches on as Truman’s life unfolds as the leading character in the hit show, for all to see.

A utopian-themed film, The Truman Show was successful at the box office, earning many nominations at the Academy and Saturn Awards.

Man on the Moon 1999, Starring Jim Carrey

In this late 90s movie, Carrey stars as Andy Kaufman, one of the most eccentric comedians of all time. A master of manipulation, Andy could fool anyone into believing in his lifelike performances.

This film wasn’t the most successful for Jim Carrey and it received many mixed reviews from critics. However, surprisingly enough, despite its poor reviews, The Man In The Moon won a Golden Globe Award in the Musical Comedy category.

Jim Carrey’s Movie Career in the 2000s

Even though the 90s decade came to an end, Jim Carrey’s successful career certainly did not. Carrey also went on to star in several hit movies in the 2000s, including:

Me, Myself and Irene 2000

In his first movie of the decade, Carrey plays the leading character of a police officer who has schizophrenia. Both his personalities, good and evil, fall in love with the same woman, Irene, played by Renee Zellweger.

This fun-filled comedy will have you laughing in your seat. After the airing of the movie, the couple announced through several media sources that they were actually a couple in real life. According to news sources, twenty years after the two dated, Carrey recalled only fond memories of his brief romance with the actress.

Bruce Almighty 2003

This movie also stars none other than Jim Carrey. He plays the part of Bruce Nolan, a television reporter who feels unlucky and depressed with his current life. Bruce complains to God over a span of several prayers. When he tells God that he doesn’t think he’s doing a very good job, God replies by offering Bruce to take over his position for the week. The part of God is played well by Morgan Freeman, another popular actor. A hilarious comedy that is worth viewing if you haven’t already done so.

Another successful movie, bringing in a whopping $484 million at the box office. It was the top movie opener on Memorial Day in history at the time of its production. It was also Carrey’s most successful paying film and grossed the fifth highest-paid movie of 2003. Bruce Almighty was Carry’s highest-paid movie thus far.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2005

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is also referred to as simply Eternal Sunshine. This film was something a little different for Carrey. Rather than his usual comedy movie. A psychological drama starring Carrey as Joel Barish. Joel discovers that his girlfriend, played by Katel Winslow, had her memory erased by government officials. Heartbroken at her memory loss, Joel undergoes the same procedure. Beforehand, he videotapes a recording of his memories of his girlfriend.

A famous quote from this movie is:

“I already forgot how I used to feel about you.”

Unfortunately, this film didn’t do as well at the box office compared to some of Carrey’s other movies, bringing in $74 million worldwide.

The Number 23 2007

Another different movie theme for Carrey. This thriller stars Carrey as Walter Sparrow,  a man who is obsessed with the number 23 after reading about it in a book given to him as a birthday gift. The book displays events similar to those that are happening in his own life. Sparrow is certain that the book was written about him and becomes overly obsessed with it.

Despite only bringing in $74 million at the box office, this film was also nominated for several awards including:

  • The Razzle Award
  • Teen Choice Award
  • World Soundtrack Award

Yes Man 2008

In this movie, Carrey plays the role of Carl Allen who becomes stuck in a rut. He attends a seminar to unleash the power of the word yes. Soon after attending the seminar, good things start to happen to him, including finding a new job and a new girlfriend. But like anything else, even good things have to come to an end, as Carl soon discovers the hard way.

Yes, Man, was a comeback movie for Jim Carrey, earning $223 million worldwide. Although it had many mixed reviews from critics, it was still a huge box office success for Carrey and his co-star Zooey Deschanel, who plays the role of his girlfriend in the film.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2020

Fast forward through the latter years of the decade, Carrey’s most recent film is Sonic the Hedgehog. An adventure comedy where Carrey plays the part of a mad scientist named Dr. Robotnik who attempts to use superpowers to conquer the world.

Sonic the Hedgehog did amazing at the box office and earned the film $320 million worldwide. A sequel to the movie is in the works and is said to be released in April 2022.

What’s Next for Canadian Actor Jim Carrey?

Jim Carrey has proven, without a doubt, to be one of the greatest Canadian actors of all time. He has left such a significant mark on the entertainment industry throughout the past decades of his career that no one can deny his brilliance.

After starring in several movies that topped the box office over the years, such as The Mask, Liar, Liar, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Carrey has certainly earned his claim to fame.

With a current net worth of over $180 million, it really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that the actor took a small break between stage life and dabbled in writing a children’s book called How Rolland Rolls in 2013. His book, of course, earned him an award. Carrey received the Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award.

As they say in show biz, go big or go home. Or is that in football?

So, what is Jim Carrey up to now?

Throughout his entire career, Carrey has continued to take on new roles that are outside his comfort zone. Carrey constantly challenges himself as an actor. He pushes his boundaries to the extreme and manages to surprise us with what he will come out with next.

No stranger to mental illness, Jim Carrey has battled through many of life’s struggles and seemingly comes out on top, entertaining us all with his great talent as a comedian and an outstanding actor in any character role he chooses to play. Perhaps the diverse array of characters he portrays on the movie set helps him deal with his everyday tragic experiences? Or, maybe, keeping busy entertaining the world, helps to take his mind off his own problems and drift away into a fantasy world?

After taking a few years off to write his children’s book and do some relaxing painting, Carrey returned to the film industry briefly in 2019 for Sonic HedgeHog. He also starred in his own television series, Kidding, which aired for two seasons. Carrey played the role of Mr. Pickles in the comedy-drama.

At the age of 60, perhaps Carrey will soon be ready for early retirement? I sure hope we haven’t seen the last of him in the movies yet!

His Sequal to Hedgehog will be released later this year, and I guess we will have to wait and see where his next ventures in life will take him…
