The 73rd Emmys Awards: Nominations, Winners, and the Red Carpet

The time has finally come to overview the celebration of the best in television. The 2021 Primetime Emmys awards ceremony took place in the Microsoft Theater in Downtown, Los Angeles on September 19th. Most importantly, shows such as the slow-burning crime drama “Mare of Easttown” and the electrifying statement piece “I May Destroy You” are all in the chase for golden statues.

The Emmys cover a ton of awards. Last weekend,  Creative Emmys celebrated those shows and many more sweep up honours for outstanding artistic and technical achievements. The Television Academy, aka the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, awards the best in television in multiple categories with each winner taking home a shiny Golden statue.

A brief history regarding the Television Academy Awards to understand their significance. Additionally, why are they are a symbol of excellence? Specifically, the concept for the Emmy Awards came into being in 1948.

However, the Television Academy’s founding fathers were struggling to name the award. This led to the Television Academy founder Sid Cassyd suggesting “Ike,” the nickname for the television iconoscope tube. While pioneer television engineer and future (1949) Academy president Harry Lubcke suggests “Immy”.Moreover, this term is a nickname for the image-orthicon camera tube instrumental in the technical development of television. Furthermore, “Immy” is given feminine energy by using the term “Emmy” because of the statuette, whose designer is an engineer, Louis McManus. He enlists his wife Dorothy to model for it. It is not a surprise that a statue that depicts excellence in television is designed by a woman. Specifically, the Emmy statue depicts the winged “muse of art uplifting the electron of science.

The Emmy Nominations

The nominations for the Emmy awards are held on July 13, 2021, by Ron and Jasmine Cephas Jones via a virtual event.

This year, including its nominations at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Ted Lasso set a new record. Mainly, by receiving the most nominations for a comedy series in the awards’ history with 20 nominations. Surprisingly, the Apple TV+ sports comedy surpasses the record held by the Fox musical comedy-drama Glee. As Glee with 19 nominations in 2010. Whereas MJ Rodriguez of the series Pose became the first-ever transgender person to be in nomination for a major acting Emmy Award. Whereas The Handmaid’s Tale received nominations for 21 Emmy awards.

In the category of outstanding drama series, the anti-hero series; The Boys: the viral sensation, Bridgerton; the dystopian drama, The Handmaid’s Tale and other nominees include Lovecraft Country. The Mandalorian, the hit sensation, Pose and deeply beloved, This Is Us. But the elusive series of the British Royal Family, The Crown, took home the golden statue.

While in the category of outstanding comedy series, the nominees include the politically correct comedy, Black-ish. Also, the fight extravaganza, Cobra Kai; the slightly offensive, Emily in Paris; the Flight Attendant starring Penny from the Big Bang Theory. Moreover, the shows, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, Pen15 were also in the running. But the comedy series, “ Ted Lasso” took home the golden statue.

Supporting Actors Nominations & Winners

In the world of comedy, the supporting actor in a comedy series nominees were Paul Reiser – The Kominsky Method and Carl Clemons-Hopkins – Hacks. While the record-breaking show Ted Lasso swept the nominations with four in this category.  Namely, Nick Mohammed, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift and while Saturday Night Live secured two nominations( Kenan Thompson & Bowen Yang). Additionally,  Paul Reiser from The Kominsky Method, everyone surprisingly failed in comparison to Brett Goldstein – Ted Lasso, who took home the award.

Next on this list is the Emmy category for best supporting actor in a limited series or movie are: Thomas Brodie-Sangster – The Queen’s Gambit; Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff and Anthony Ramos – Hamilton. Whereas the show by the fantastic Michela Coel, the role of the supportive best friend, Kwame, played by Paapa Essiedu – I May Destroy You, received a nomination, whereas Evan Peters – Mare Of Easttown became the winner.

And in the category of supporting actor in a drama series, the nominees are the late Michael K Williams – Lovecraft Country; Giancarlo Esposito – The Mandalorian, John Lithgow – Perry Mason and the fans who adored Chris Sullivan – This Is Us. While in the category of supporting actress in a limited series or film, the nominees are Renee Elise Goldsberry – Hamilton; Kathryn Hahn – WandaVision; Moses Ingram – The Queen’s Gambit; Jean Smart – Mare Of Easttown. Mainly, the winner is Julianne Nicholson – Mare Of Easttown. I am happy with this Emmy winner as Mare of Eastown is a show that I thoroughly enjoyed because it mirrored society in a realistic manner.

Moving down the list, the category of supporting actress in a drama series saw three nominations from The Crown. Mainly, Helena Bonham Carter, Emerald Fennell and stiff competition from The Handmaid’s Tale with four nominations. Mainly, Madeleine Brewer, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Samira Wiley. However, Lovecraft Country secured a nomination for Aunjanue Ellis but the winner was Gillian Anderson – The Crown.

Even though the gold standard for hilarious comedy on television, Saturday Night Live, received three nominations( Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong), it failed to please the Television Academy. They ended up awarding  Hannah Waddingham – Ted Lasso the Emmys for supporting actress in a comedy series. Additionally, even Juno Temple – Ted Lasso secured a nomination, while other nominees include: Rosie Perez – The Flight Attendant and Hannah Einbinder – Hack.

Leading Actresses Nominations and Winners

The most anticipated category: Lead actress in a limited series or movie which saw a major snub, in my opinion, as the writer, producer and actor of the semi-autobiographical series  I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel wasn’t awarded the coveted Emmy. Other nominations include Elizabeth Olsen – WandaVision; Anya Taylor-Joy – The Queen’s Gambit and winning the category Kate Winslet – Mare Of Easttown.

However, in the Emmy category titled Lead actress in a comedy series, the winner Jean Smart – Hacks. Other nominees were the brilliant Aidy Bryant of SNL fame- Shrill, “Penny” from the Big Bang Theory (Kaley Cuoco0 – The Flight Attendant, the beloved Allison Janney – Mom and the style icon, Tracee Ellis Ross – Black-ish.

However, taking a 360-degree turn to this denial, Ewan McGregor – Halston rightly took home the golden statue for playing the titular role as an eccentric, talented designer, for the lead actor in a limited series or film. Whereas the other fish in the sea were Paul Bettany – WandaVision; Hugh Grant – The Undoing and two nominations for Hamilton, namely, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr.

Variety Shows Nominations & Winners

Specifically, it was no surprise that the cultural phenomenon ” RuPaul’s Drag Race” took home the golden lady for the sixth time for being the Outstanding reality competition series.

Furthermore, in the Outstanding variety talk series category, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver grabbed the gold standard of excellence.

While the Outstanding variety sketch series Emmy went to A Black Lady Sketch Show. Moreover, for outstanding variety sketch series, Saturday Night Live took the Emmy home. In particular, for Outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) award went to the famous Hamilton.

#EmmysSoWhite

There was more diversity in the Emmys presenters on Sunday night than there was in the actual winners — and people have feelings about that. #EmmysSoWhite trended on Twitter after not a single actor of color won in the acting categories despite a record number of diverse nominees this year. Strong contenders — including the late Michael K. Williams who was up for supporting actor in a drama series for “Lovecraft Country” & Michaela Coel who was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or TV movie for “I May Destroy You” — were shut out.

Coel did win for limited series writing, a first for a Black woman in that category. It was also her first Emmy.
Critics on social media weren’t happy, although there is tokenism, as the Academy thought the following was enough, but I don’t think so. There was a Black host (Cedric the Entertainer), a Black announcer (MC Lyte), and a Black recipient of The Governors Award (Debbie Allen), plus RuPaul made history by becoming the most-awarded person of color in Emmy’s history with 11 wins. I am not saying that they were only chosen because they were obliging the ceremony, as it seemed that, keeping these great choices aside, other nominees were completely shut out. As no woman or man of color, especially LGBTQIA+ community nominees except RuPaul.

Conclusion

This is a breakdown of the Emmys Awards nominees, winners and red carpet. As well as the breakdown of the post movement on Twitter, and rightfully so, as there were a lot of shut-outs that deserved the golden statue.
